ASUNCION: Some Uruguayan internationals were suspended by South American soccer organization CONMEBOL on Wednesday as a result of events that occurred during the Copa America semifinal matchup against Colombia in July.
Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez will be out for five Uruguay fixtures, while Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was banned for four matches. Uruguay’s next games in World Cup qualifying will be as host to Paraguay on Sept. 6 and four days later at Venezuela. Players from Uruguay got into a fight with spectators at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte following their team’s 1-0 loss to Colombia. Bentancur will pay $16,000, Olivera, Araujo, and Giménez $12,000 each, and Núñez will additionally pay a fine of $20,000 at Nunez is suspended for five games and Bentancur for four following a scuffle during the Copa America.

Giménez told journalists after the incident the team were trying to protect their families from Colombian supporters.
